生于加拿大安大略省，先后就讀于里德利大學(xué)、麥吉爾大學(xué)，并在美國戲劇藝術(shù)學(xué)院學(xué)習(xí)。早期，他在紐約舞臺上很有成就，主演過《三人騎一馬》等名劇。1943年，在希區(qū)柯克導(dǎo)演的影片《疑影》中初登銀幕，隨后在米高梅影片公司工作三年，在近十部影片中出演角色；其中憑借《第七年十字架》獲得了1944年最佳男配角金像獎金像獎的提名。二戰(zhàn)后，他既從事戲劇活動，又在好萊塢拍攝影片。作為
