涉足電影圈之前威廉大部分電視和直播劇場里工作1958年首度出演了影片《手足之情》（The Brothers Karamazov），從此開始了與電影不解之緣。

60年代威廉·戛納電影作品比較豐富，著名的有《闖入者》、《紐倫堡大審判》（Judgment at Nuremberg）等。除了電影，夏納還《Alfred Hitchcock Presents》、《The Defenders》等電視劇中擔(dān)任客串1966年作為USS Enterprise董事拍攝了三季《星艦迷航記》（Star Trek）。該劇拍攝完成后威廉把大部分時(shí)間花在拍攝黃金時(shí)段播放電視劇上面，如《Hawaii Five-O》、《Marcus Welby》等。同時(shí)也出演了《Comanche blanco》和《蜘蛛王國》（Kingdom of the Spiders）等幾部影片，不過大都是B級片甚至更低。直到80年代，夏納演藝事業(yè)才再次煥發(fā)出活力，把“星艦”系列電視劇拍攝成了大制作系列電影《星艦迷航記》（Star Trek: The Motion Picture）、《星艦迷航記2：天汗憤怒》（Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan）、《星艦迷航記3：魔宮龍虎斗》（Star Trek III: The Search for Spock）、《星艦迷航記4：搶救未來》（Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home）和《星艦迷航記5：終極先鋒》（Star Trek V: The Final Frontier）和《星艦迷航記6：未來之城 》（Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country）。他還出演過警匪連續(xù)劇《T.J. Hooker》，威廉·夏納以其喜劇天份在《瞞天過海飛飛飛》（Airplane II: The Sequel）、《重裝武器1》（Loaded Weapon 1）和《選美小姐》（Miss Congeniality）中征服了無數(shù)粉絲。
