早年經歷
齊格蒙德出生于匈牙利，在蘇聯(lián)進攻匈牙利的1956年離開祖國，1962年加入美國國籍。早期在美國曾以威廉之名拍攝B級電影，并以四處打工維持生計。在逃亡當時，他曾拍下蘇聯(lián)軍隊鎮(zhèn)壓布達佩斯市民抵抗的畫面帶往美國。1999年獲得美國電影攝影師協(xié)會功勞獎。
演藝經歷
齊格蒙德善于運用自然光攝影，在20世紀70年代被視為美國電影新浪潮先鋒。他曾與《黑色大麗花》導演布萊恩德帕爾瑪有過多次合作，1981年的《兇線》，1990年的《夜都迷情》也都由其掌鏡。

2016年1月，維爾莫斯·齊格蒙德于美國加利福尼亞州大瑟爾去世，享年85歲。
