愛(ài)德華·阿諾德善于扮演上流社會(huì)的各種人物，如法官、大富賈、闊老、律師、議員、政客等。他在弗蘭克·卡普拉導(dǎo)演的《浮生若夢(mèng)》(1938)和《史密斯先生到華盛頓》(1939)里，都有精彩的表演，而且還在很多影片中扮演了大量的歷史人物，他演起來(lái)得心應(yīng)手。四十年代初，他有很長(zhǎng)一段時(shí)間都在為米高梅影片公司拍片。1942年，津納曼在未成名前導(dǎo)演的一部小成本偵探片《義犬盲探》，即由愛(ài)德華·阿諾德扮演盲眼偵探鄧肯·麥克萊韋，并獲得好評(píng)。兩年后米高梅公司又讓他主演了一部以鄧肯·麥克萊韋為主人翁的偵探片《瞽目神探》。愛(ài)德華·阿諾德還曾于1941年當(dāng)選為好萊塢電影演員工會(huì)的主席。
