父親是蒙特拿州法官，大學(xué)畢業(yè)後為當(dāng)?shù)貓?bào)社畫(huà)政治漫畫(huà)。24年前往加州，原意是當(dāng)卡通畫(huà)家，后來(lái)卻是當(dāng)推銷員。25年經(jīng)好萊塢的朋友介紹，在西部片當(dāng)臨時(shí)演員。翌年在一次偶然機(jī)會(huì)下當(dāng)上第二男主角。此片后來(lái)賣座鼎盛，他便水漲船高。到了30年代，他已成為影壇巨星，戲路也逐漸開(kāi)闊。36年首次以《富貴浮云》獲金像獎(jiǎng)男主角提名，其后得過(guò)兩次奧斯卡最佳男主角獎(jiǎng)，一是41年的《約克軍曹》、一是52年的《日正當(dāng)中》，另外，61年還得到影藝學(xué)院頒給他的特別奧斯卡獎(jiǎng)。該年5月13日，他因癌癥驟發(fā)去世。
