　　出生于新西蘭一個(gè)小鎮(zhèn)上的理查德從小就具備了喜劇細(xì)胞，1978年從牛津大學(xué)畢業(yè)后他開始寫作劇本，第一份工作就是為四個(gè)系列的電視節(jié)目編寫劇本，并榮獲殊榮，使得他開始在業(yè)界站穩(wěn)腳跟。1989年理查德撰寫的電影劇本The Tall Guy被搬上了大銀幕，但此時(shí)的理查德并沒(méi)有將工作重心放在電影上，1992年的Mr Bean>（憨豆先生）系列的一炮打響不僅使得Rowan Atkinson成為世界公認(rèn)的天才喜劇明星，更是讓理查德一步步開拓了自己的事業(yè)范圍，1994年的Four Weddings and a Funeral （四個(gè)婚禮一個(gè)葬禮）， 1999年的Notting Hill（諾丁山），2001年的Bridget Jones’s Diary（BJ單身日記），2003年的Love Actually（真愛(ài)至上），2004年的Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason（BJ單身日記2）都將他的事業(yè)推向了巔峰，理查德的愛(ài)情片風(fēng)格往往是輕松搞笑，但是其中也不乏宣揚(yáng)了自己對(duì)于愛(ài)情和友情的看法。

2018年操刀編劇了一部有關(guān)于披頭士音樂(lè)的音樂(lè)電影《你需要的只是愛(ài)》。
