在80年代末期,kool g rap在Marley Marl的Juice Crew里面發(fā)揮著主導(dǎo)作用,但他卻從來沒有達到以為超級巨星的地位,但這位皇后區(qū)的硬銳說唱歌手忍耐了10年,終于在00年代爆發(fā)了.貫穿他的演藝生涯,G rap一直維持著一些虔誠的跟隨者,主要是基于他80年代末到90年代初的歌迷和后來rap黃金時期復(fù)興浪潮的跟隨者.在kool g rap的創(chuàng)作低迷的時期,Cold Chillin’廠牌這幾年定期的在再版發(fā)行他與DJ polo的關(guān)鍵的經(jīng)典的唱片.在黃金時期,無數(shù)的這個時期的歌手被擊倒在路邊(消沉下去),但是g rap的平靜的漠漠的攀升到一個傳奇的地位,多半在2000年代他得到的承認就跟他80年代末他最輝煌的時期一樣.

　　Kool G Rap在皇后區(qū)的一個破爛的貧民窟認識了Eric Barrier and Polo,2個有著共同的hip-hop愛好的朋友.在Barrier在eric B.和Rakim組合有著短暫的成功的經(jīng)歷的時候,Polo and G Rap合作并發(fā)行了It’s a Demo/I’m Fly 12,是由Cold Chillin’廠牌在86年出版的.這首傳奇的單曲得到了許多的第一,后來"Streets of New York," "Poison," and "Road to the Riches" 也都成為了引人關(guān)注的單曲.g rap也喜歡marl制作的"The Symphony,",這首歌保證了他的傳奇地位.89年他終于發(fā)行了大碟(LP),這向世人證明,g rap從地下的制作已經(jīng)被主流音樂所認同.此時,他在Juice Crew的隊友Big Daddy Kane and Biz Markie也發(fā)行了熱門的單曲,擁有好銷量的大碟,在MTV上面露面,G rap卻進入了一個特別時期,他的單曲"Road to the Riches" and "Erase Racism," 及上面提到的許多單曲都很受歡迎,但是他的大碟卻沒有預(yù)期所想象的銷量.

　　90年代中,g rap與他的合作者分開,而單飛成為一名solo歌手,他96年在Cold Chillin’廠牌發(fā)行了4,5,6專集,以及Rated XXX (1996)和Roots of Evil (1998).這些專集都沒有獲得人們很大的關(guān)注,不管是商業(yè)上還是在評論界,這是G rap就好像要和他在80年代的同時期的歌手們一樣從old school風(fēng)格里面消亡.當(dāng)G rap的名字在90年代末已經(jīng)沒有多少人知道了,這位堅定的MC開始通過自己的成就與一些歌手合作,像Fat Joe, Big Pun, M.O.P., Mobb Deep, Nas, RZA, Big L, and Talib Kweli,G rap得到了堅實的動力.后來他加入了Rawkus,他在2001年被提議發(fā)行專集來證明這位偉大的rappa又回來了!The Giancana Story,2002年經(jīng)過一些坎坷后終于發(fā)行了這張專集.雖然這張專集延期了好長時間,它還是證明了G Rap的又一個偉大的時期來到了.

　　kool g rap在’da heat’唱出了這樣的歌詞,并且展現(xiàn)了人們最喜歡的hip-hop里面那種無修飾的最真實的一面.他的專集roots of evil確實保持了他的高度激情.

　　許多3年前聽過4,5,6這張專集的人們可能會懷疑,并且擁有很充分的理由.在前三張由dj polo制作的經(jīng)典專集后,g rap的第四張專集雖然歌詞依然強勁,但是在節(jié)拍的制作上卻有些問題.除了他的第一首單曲"It’s a shame"和與Nas合作的"fast life"這兩首歌,其他的歌曲都隨著這張專集慢慢的從人們的印象中褪去顏色.

　　雖然沒犯下什末錯誤,g rap仍然不想做出又一張蒼白無力的專集.g rap和dr.butcher兩人制作的歌曲就像個半自動的機器(semi-automatic).

　　"Cannot Fire"將isley brother的一首歌取樣并制作出一種病態(tài)的但卻有價值的歌曲. "Tekilla Sunrise"有種西班牙式的風(fēng)情而讓你想知道G Rap and Antonia Banderas是如何處理每一個細節(jié)的(an action flick).

　　而G rap他最經(jīng)典的說唱方式就是他電影化的,講故事似的Rap.G rap通常因為他創(chuàng)作他的歌詞生動真實的能力而得到贊揚,他的歌詞使你好像有種身臨其境的感覺(as though you could walk right into the portrait his words painted).他的P.R 公司都稱之為"Black Mafioso",

　　但我更愿意稱之為FAT ASS SHIT.他不只是想在歌詞中談些簡單的注意槍支和殺死敵人等等,他會告訴你現(xiàn)在的形勢怎樣,誰是暗中的狙擊手,他們穿的什末樣,誰中了槍,誰死亡了,他們的血在土上看起來像什末(He doesn’t just talk about busting guns and killing enemies.. he’ll tell you what the drama was, who the snipers were, what they were wearing, who got hit where, how they hit the ground, and what their blood looked like on the hard concrete.)(以上是直譯,我想意思應(yīng)該是說g rap的歌詞并不是夸夸而談).聽G rap的歌就像是在讀一本Donald Goines的書,他讓你也身臨其境.

　　因此當(dāng)你看到這張專集的時候一定不能錯過它,并且注意他的首支單曲"Foul Cats".我也推薦"Home Sweet Funeral Home"和"Can’t Stop the Shine",因為他們充滿了G rap自己的特色.很早出道的g rap就帶領(lǐng)了自己的潮流,Pay your respects to the ORIGINAL "G".
