早年生活
德里克·雅可比出生于倫敦東區(qū)的雷頓斯通。母親戴莤·格特魯?shù)率敲媪系甑陠T，父親阿爾弗德·喬治·雅可比是煙草商。曾祖父是19世紀(jì)移民到英格蘭的德國(guó)人。德里克·雅可比形容他的童年生活是快樂(lè)的。在上中學(xué)時(shí)，他加入了當(dāng)?shù)氐奈枧_(tái)劇團(tuán)。在六年級(jí)時(shí)，德里克·雅克比在舞臺(tái)劇《哈姆雷特》中扮演角色，并在愛丁堡邊緣藝術(shù)節(jié)的表演中大獲好評(píng)。
18歲時(shí)，德里克·雅克比獲得獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金前往劍橋大學(xué)圣約翰學(xué)院攻讀歷史。他在劍橋大學(xué)扮演過(guò)許多角色，包括哈姆雷特。由于在《愛德華二世》中的精湛表演，他在畢業(yè)后立刻被邀請(qǐng)至伯明罕儲(chǔ)備劇院。
個(gè)人生活
德里克·雅各比是位出柜的同志。他的伴侶是Richard Clifford（也是位演員），二人從1977年開始相戀，并于2006年3月——英國(guó)同性婚姻法律生效四個(gè)月后登記結(jié)婚。
演藝生涯
在伯明罕儲(chǔ)備劇院，德里克得到勞倫斯·奧利弗的賞識(shí)。后者邀請(qǐng)他回倫敦，并介紹他到皇家國(guó)民劇院。
1963年，德里克在皇家國(guó)民劇院的開出演出劇《哈姆雷特》中扮演雷歐提斯，與彼德·奧圖演對(duì)手戲。同年，德里克在皇家國(guó)民劇院的舞臺(tái)劇《奧賽羅》中扮演卡西奧，并在1965年的同名電影中扮演同一角色。
2013年，德雷克與伊恩·麥凱倫在電視劇《極品基老伴》中扮演一對(duì)共同生活了48年的同性情侶。
2017年，參演歷史劇情片《劍與權(quán)杖》（Swords and Scepters）。
2018年3月16日，參演的電影《古墓麗影：源起之戰(zhàn)》上映。
