1975年畢業(yè)于香港中文大學(xué)經(jīng)濟(jì)系，取得社會(huì)科學(xué)學(xué)士（經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)）一級(jí)榮譽(yù)成績(jī)，獲得經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)學(xué)士學(xué)位；

1977年美國(guó)加州大學(xué)柏克萊分校經(jīng)濟(jì)系碩士；

1980年獲取美國(guó)加州大學(xué)柏克萊分校經(jīng)濟(jì)系博士學(xué)位；

1980年任美國(guó)佛羅里達(dá)州立大學(xué)經(jīng)濟(jì)系助理教授，1985年晉升副教授并獲終身教職；

1992年加入香港科技大學(xué)，為創(chuàng)校成員之一，任香港科技大學(xué)經(jīng)濟(jì)系教授，其后歷任商學(xué)院經(jīng)濟(jì)系系主任、副院長(zhǎng)、哲學(xué)博士及工商管理碩士課程主任等職。

1995年起任香港科技大學(xué)經(jīng)濟(jì)系主任，曾任復(fù)旦大學(xué)客座教授及汕頭大學(xué)兼任教授；

1993年-1996年任香港科技大學(xué)工商管理學(xué)院副院長(zhǎng)；

2009年獲委任為香港科技大學(xué)商學(xué)院院長(zhǎng)；

2009年至2013年間擔(dān)任香港科技大學(xué)工商管理學(xué)院（香港科大商學(xué)院）院長(zhǎng)；

2013年獲嶺南大學(xué)校長(zhǎng)遴選委員會(huì)推薦接任校長(zhǎng)，但其親梁振英的政治背景備受質(zhì)疑，因而受到學(xué)生會(huì)強(qiáng)烈反對(duì)。

2013年9月出任香港嶺南大學(xué)校長(zhǎng)。

曾任《國(guó)際經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)報(bào)》及《太平洋經(jīng)濟(jì)評(píng)論》兩份學(xué)術(shù)期刊副編輯。
