人物經(jīng)歷
1975年，莫毅明畢業(yè)于圣保羅男女中學(xué)，并獲得國(guó)際教育協(xié)會(huì)（IIE）獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金往美國(guó)芝加哥大學(xué)當(dāng)本科生。
1977年初，轉(zhuǎn)讀耶魯大學(xué)。
1978年，獲得耶魯大學(xué)文學(xué)碩士學(xué)位。
1980年，獲得斯坦福大學(xué)博士學(xué)位。同年進(jìn)入美國(guó)普林斯頓大學(xué)任教，其后歷任哥倫比亞大學(xué)及法國(guó)巴黎大學(xué)教授。
1984年，當(dāng)選艾爾弗雷德斯隆研究員（Alfred Sloan Fellow）。
1994年，回香港擔(dān)任香港大學(xué)數(shù)學(xué)系講座教授。
1999年起，擔(dān)任香港大學(xué)數(shù)學(xué)研究所所長(zhǎng)。
2011年，就任香港大學(xué)謝仕榮衛(wèi)碧堅(jiān)基金教授席（數(shù)學(xué)）。
主要成就
科研成就
科研綜述莫毅明致力于多復(fù)變函數(shù)論、復(fù)微分幾何與代數(shù)幾何的研究，于1988年結(jié)合非線性偏微分方程領(lǐng)域的里奇流方法與代數(shù)幾何領(lǐng)域里關(guān)于有理曲線的理論解決了廣義弗蘭克爾猜想。他引進(jìn)了完備凱勒流形的代數(shù)幾何化，并與來(lái)自中國(guó)科學(xué)院的數(shù)學(xué)家鐘家慶教授合作證明了有限體積完備凱勒流形的緊致化定理。論文于1989年在《數(shù)學(xué)年刊》發(fā)表，為中國(guó)自20世紀(jì)70年代改革開(kāi)放以來(lái)首篇有中國(guó)國(guó)內(nèi)數(shù)學(xué)家為共同作者在該雜志發(fā)表的論文。
莫毅明與合作者共同發(fā)展了一套運(yùn)用極小有理曲線簇（VMRT）研究費(fèi)諾流形的幾何理論，于1998年通過(guò)此幾何理論證明了不可約緊埃爾米特對(duì)稱空間在凱勒形變下的剛性定理，并于1999年與2004年解答了代數(shù)幾何領(lǐng)域的拉薩斯菲爾德問(wèn)題。
大約自2010年始，莫毅明開(kāi)展其橫跨代數(shù)幾何、復(fù)微分幾何與數(shù)論領(lǐng)域的研究工作。莫教授及其合作者致力發(fā)展一套關(guān)于充滿直線之單直紋射影流形上的子流形的微分幾何理論，并運(yùn)用復(fù)微分幾何方法解決有界對(duì)稱域的商空間上一系列來(lái)自數(shù)論的幾何難題。
學(xué)術(shù)論著截至2011年，莫毅明發(fā)表逾80篇研究論文，其中10篇刊登在《數(shù)學(xué)年鑒》《數(shù)學(xué)發(fā)明》等期刊內(nèi)。

學(xué)術(shù)交流1980年，莫毅明應(yīng)邀訪問(wèn)中國(guó)科學(xué)院并進(jìn)行一個(gè)月關(guān)于復(fù)幾何方面的專題演講；此后多次與到訪的中國(guó)國(guó)內(nèi)優(yōu)秀數(shù)學(xué)家合作研究。
1994年，莫毅明受邀在蘇黎世舉辦的國(guó)際數(shù)學(xué)家大會(huì)（ICM）作45分鐘學(xué)術(shù)報(bào)告。
2018年12月，莫毅明受邀在北京國(guó)際數(shù)學(xué)研究中心舉辦的2018年“數(shù)學(xué)及其應(yīng)用”教育部重點(diǎn)實(shí)驗(yàn)室年會(huì)上作題為《Uniformization of Certain Subvarieties of Finite-Volume Quotient Spaces of Bounded Symmetric Domains》的特邀報(bào)告。
科研成果獎(jiǎng)勵(lì)2008年1月，莫毅明獨(dú)立完成的《關(guān)于對(duì)稱與齊次空間的復(fù)幾何》項(xiàng)目獲得2007年度國(guó)家自然科學(xué)獎(jiǎng)二等獎(jiǎng)，為該年度全國(guó)數(shù)學(xué)學(xué)科僅有的兩項(xiàng)獲獎(jiǎng)項(xiàng)目之一。
人才培養(yǎng)
教育理念根據(jù)自身成長(zhǎng)經(jīng)驗(yàn)，莫毅明建議香港特區(qū)政府多啟發(fā)年輕一代對(duì)數(shù)學(xué)的興趣，讓他們認(rèn)識(shí)數(shù)學(xué)的重要性，也可用戲劇、電影、游戲等活潑手法推廣科普。他認(rèn)為基礎(chǔ)教育的老師需要向?qū)W生解釋出學(xué)問(wèn)背后的機(jī)理，而非只是以考試為目標(biāo)。
莫毅明認(rèn)為要啟發(fā)學(xué)生的興趣，并非僅靠一所學(xué)校的力量，而需要有協(xié)作計(jì)劃，可以讓中學(xué)和大學(xué)聯(lián)合構(gòu)思新點(diǎn)子，例如請(qǐng)中學(xué)生試讀大學(xué)課程，亦可通過(guò)戲劇、電影、游戲等多種方式。
講座報(bào)告2011年4月，莫毅明應(yīng)廈門大學(xué)數(shù)學(xué)科學(xué)學(xué)院的邀請(qǐng)作了題為《Germs of measure-preserving holomorphic maps on bounded symmetric domains》的南強(qiáng)講座。
2018年10月，莫毅明在香港城市大學(xué)主持高等研究院杰出講座，講題是《曲率及單值化定理對(duì)有界對(duì)稱域的關(guān)系》。

莫毅明自1992年起任《數(shù)學(xué)年鑒》編輯委員，2002至2014年期間擔(dān)任《數(shù)學(xué)發(fā)明》編輯委員。
莫毅明曾分別擔(dān)任2016年國(guó)際數(shù)學(xué)家大會(huì)（ICM 2006）“代數(shù)幾何與復(fù)幾何”小組與2014年國(guó)際數(shù)學(xué)家大會(huì)（ICM 2014）“分析及其應(yīng)用”小組的核心選委，并被國(guó)際數(shù)學(xué)聯(lián)盟委任為2010年國(guó)際數(shù)學(xué)家大會(huì)（ICM 2010）的菲爾茲獎(jiǎng)選委。
