1969年-1978年黑龍江生產(chǎn)建設(shè)兵團(tuán)知青.1978年--1981年國際經(jīng)濟(jì)貿(mào)易大學(xué)(北京)經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)碩士(中國經(jīng)濟(jì)史專業(yè)，1981) .1983年進(jìn)入美國普林斯頓大學(xué)，師從杜希德先生攻讀博士學(xué)位。畢業(yè)后，任教于新加坡南洋理工大學(xué)教育學(xué)院，為準(zhǔn)教授。曾任日本關(guān)西大學(xué)COE客座教授（2008年12月-2009年2月）。著有《漢唐中日關(guān)系論》（文津出版社，1997）。

王貞平是中國古代史研究領(lǐng)域的專家，在唐代外交制度史、對外經(jīng)濟(jì)貿(mào)易史、中日關(guān)系史等方面有很高的造詣，是國際上有較高影響力的學(xué)者。他的英文專著《漢唐中日關(guān)系史》出版后，引起學(xué)界廣泛關(guān)注。包括美國《哈佛大學(xué)亞洲學(xué)志》、《美國歷史評論》、倫敦大學(xué)《亞非學(xué)院紀(jì)要》、日本《日本學(xué)志》、《日本時(shí)報(bào)》、加拿大《國際歷史評論》在內(nèi)的美、英、日、學(xué)術(shù)雜志報(bào)刊共發(fā)表了九篇書評，給以很高的評價(jià)。他先后擔(dān)任美國普林斯頓大學(xué)《東亞圖書館雜志》主編，印度尼赫魯大學(xué)《中古史雜志》顧問、日本關(guān)西大學(xué)《東亞文化交流研究雜志》顧問。數(shù)次赴日本關(guān)西大學(xué)發(fā)表主題講演，擔(dān)任客座教授。他在2009年剛剛完成另外一部英文著作《多極亞洲中的唐代中國》（共六百余頁，將由美國夏威夷大學(xué)出版），全面探討唐代的外交關(guān)系。王貞平被列入美國《當(dāng)代作者》一書中，是當(dāng)今活躍在美國、日本學(xué)界的引人注目的學(xué)者。
