1984年畢業(yè)于原長春地質(zhì)學院地質(zhì)系獲學士學位，1987年獲碩士學位；

1990年畢業(yè)于北京大學地質(zhì)學系獲博士學位，留校任講師；

1993年晉升為副教授，1999年晉升為教授，博士生導師。

1992年10月至1993年1月在美國斯坦福大學地質(zhì)系進修；

1995年1月－1995年7月：香港大學地球科學系高級訪問學者(求槎獎獲得者)；

2000年3月－2001年4月：澳大利亞國立大學地質(zhì)學系訪問學者；

2003年11月至2004年1月：美國斯坦福大學地質(zhì)系合作研究。

1998年7月－2001年10月：擔任北京大學地質(zhì)學系副系主任；

2001年10月－ ：兼任《科學通報》特約編輯，《巖石學報》編委，《巖石礦物學雜志》副主編，中國礦物巖石地球化學學會變質(zhì)巖專業(yè)委員會副主任委員，中國地質(zhì)學會巖石學專業(yè)委員會委員，教育部地球物理與地質(zhì)學教學指導分委員會委員，西北大學大陸動力學教育部重點實驗室學術(shù)委員會委員等學術(shù)兼職。

主要的學術(shù)兼職有：《科學通報》、《巖石學報》、《高校地質(zhì)學報》、《地質(zhì)與勘探》和《地學前緣》雜志編委，《巖石礦物學雜志》和《Geoscience Frontier》副主編等。中國巖石礦物地球化學學會變質(zhì)巖專業(yè)委員會副主任委員，中國地質(zhì)學會大陸地殼與地幔研究分會副主任，第十、十一屆國家自然科學基金委員會地學部專家組成員，國際地科聯(lián)固體地球組成和演化專業(yè)委員會委員（SECE）等。

曾主講的課程包括本科生的《普通巖石學》、《地球科學前沿》，研究生的《高等巖石學》、《變質(zhì)地質(zhì)學》等。

主要從事與造山帶形成與演化有關的巖石學研究工作，研究方向為變質(zhì)地質(zhì)學。在新疆西天山榴輝巖相變質(zhì)巖石中發(fā)現(xiàn)了一系列超高壓變質(zhì)礦物和特征結(jié)構(gòu)，從而提出了新疆西天山是一類由洋殼俯沖發(fā)生超高壓變質(zhì)地區(qū)。這是我們國家繼大別－蘇魯和柴北緣－阿爾金超高壓帶之后，確切報道的由洋殼巖石俯沖經(jīng)歷超高壓變質(zhì)的地區(qū)，并進一步確定了西天山超高壓變質(zhì)帶是變質(zhì)地熱梯度最低的地區(qū)，因而引起了同行學者們的廣泛關注。另外在很低溫變質(zhì)作用方面以新疆西準噶爾為例建立了含石榴石葡萄石綠釬石相平衡關系，糾正了一直認為石榴石只有在綠片巖相變質(zhì)的條件下才開始出現(xiàn)的認識；建立了陜北鄂爾多斯盆地埋藏變質(zhì)演化系列，提出了沉積物形成過程中源區(qū)的風化作用可使稀土元素發(fā)生分餾等觀點。共發(fā)表論文50余篇，其中SCI論文20多篇（國外SCI雜志論文10多篇）。研究工作主要集中在我國西部的幾個造山帶中，如：新疆西天山、青海甘肅的柴北緣－北祁連山和新疆西昆侖山等。重點是開展與造山帶形成和演化相關的高壓－超高壓變質(zhì)地質(zhì)學研究方面。

張立飛及其團隊近年來在我國西部超高壓變質(zhì)作用研究方面取得了一批重要研究成果：發(fā)現(xiàn)并確定了新疆西南天山洋殼深俯沖超高壓變質(zhì)帶，這是世界上規(guī)模最大的洋殼超高壓變質(zhì)帶，提出了其形成演化的雙變質(zhì)帶構(gòu)造模式；在柴北緣大陸型超高壓變質(zhì)帶中識別出了洋殼超高壓變質(zhì)的殘片，提出了柴北緣由大洋俯沖到大陸俯沖碰撞的演化模式。至今共發(fā)表論文80多篇，被Sci論文引用1100多次。正在負責的主要項目有國家自然科學基金創(chuàng)新群體項目“變質(zhì)作用與造山帶演化”（2009－2011），國家自然科學基金重點項目“西南天山洋殼深俯沖超高壓變質(zhì)與折返”（2008－2011），國家973項目二級課題“深俯沖洋殼的化學變化與抬升過程”（2008－2012）等。
