歐陽(yáng)瑩之先后在上海、香港、美國(guó)等地就讀小學(xué)、中學(xué)、大學(xué)，1972年獲麻省理工學(xué)院物理學(xué)博士學(xué)位。畢業(yè)后曾在美國(guó)惠普公司供職，后在麻省理工學(xué)院從事研究工作20余年。1992年以來(lái)，她的研究興趣轉(zhuǎn)向?qū)�科學(xué)技術(shù)本質(zhì)的哲學(xué)考察。著有《量子場(chǎng)論如何可能？》（1995）、《復(fù)雜系統(tǒng)理論基礎(chǔ)》（1998）、《日常生活和認(rèn)知科學(xué)中的心智》（2000）、《工程學(xué)——無(wú)盡的前沿》（2008年）等。
