1968年12月本科畢業(yè)于復(fù)旦大學(xué)生物系生物化學(xué)與微生物專業(yè)，1980年6月研究生結(jié)業(yè)于復(fù)旦大學(xué)生物系植物生理專業(yè)，
1983年5月碩士畢業(yè)于美國肯塔基州立大學(xué)植物病理系植物抗病專業(yè)，
1985年10月博士畢業(yè)于美國肯塔基州立大學(xué)植物病理系植物病毒專業(yè)。
1985年10月至1988年12月在美國新澤西州羅氏分子生物學(xué)研究所博士后從事植物分子病毒學(xué)研究；
1989年5月至1990年10月在中國科學(xué)院上海植物生理研究所博士后期間從事植物病毒基因工程研究。
1990年10月任中國科學(xué)院上海植物生理研究所研究員，1995年任博士生導(dǎo)師。
1991年以來作為訪問學(xué)者、科研合作者、國家科委、中國科學(xué)院、上�？萍即韴F(tuán)成員多次訪問美國、英國、法國、日本、意大利、韓國、新加坡、中國香港等地研究所、大學(xué)、政府從事合作研究和訪問。
社會兼職
曾任中國科學(xué)院上海植物生理研究所所長助理、副所長，中國科學(xué)院上海植物生理生態(tài)研究所所長，中國科學(xué)院上海生命科學(xué)研究院副院長職務(wù)、植物分子遺傳國家重點實驗室副主任和主任、上海大學(xué)生命科學(xué)學(xué)院院長、中國植物生理學(xué)會副理事長和理事長、兼任上海交通大學(xué)生物科學(xué)與技術(shù)學(xué)院副院長等職務(wù)�，F(xiàn)任上海大學(xué)生命學(xué)院教授、博士生導(dǎo)師、上海市能源作物培育與應(yīng)用重點實驗室顧問。
他是中國植物生理學(xué)會、中國生物工程學(xué)會、中國微生物學(xué)會、中國藻類學(xué)會、中國細(xì)胞生物學(xué)會理事、上海生物工程學(xué)會常務(wù)理事、上海煙草學(xué)會副理事長，全國政協(xié)委員、九三學(xué)社中央委員、上海市委委員、上海市特約檢察員。
2012.1.15辭去政協(xié)上海市第十一屆委員會常務(wù)委員。

研究方向
（1）植物病毒病理學(xué)。以煙草和重組煙草花葉病毒為獨特的研究系統(tǒng)，研究植物與病毒相互作用的分子機(jī)理；（2）植物逆境生理學(xué)。以鹽藻為研究材料，借助功能基因組學(xué)等最新的研究手段，研究植物對逆境抗性的分子機(jī)理；（3）能源微生物的研究。
