曾任蘇州大學材料與化學化工學部主任。
1994年，蘇州大學本科畢業(yè)。
2000年，畢業(yè)于廈門大學并獲得理學博士學位。
2000年，前往新加坡國立大學材料與工程研究所參加中新聯(lián)合計劃項目研究，2002年英國利物浦大學化學系博士后，于2004年底回國參加工作，并被蘇州大學聘為教授。
2004年12月，蘇州大學任教。
2006年，任博士生導師。
2020年12月，蘇州大學副校長。

2020年12月15日，中共江蘇省委組織部發(fā)布干部任前公示，姚建林擬任蘇州大學黨委常委、副校長，試用期一年。
2020年12月30日，江蘇省人民政府研究決定，任命姚建林為蘇州大學副校長，試用期一年。
研究方向
主要從事有關(guān)表面增強拉曼光譜（SERS）機理，過渡金屬表面的SERS效應(yīng)及應(yīng)用，納米材料和SERS的內(nèi)在關(guān)聯(lián)，電化學合成等研究。
界面電化學；表面增強拉曼光譜；納米材料合成及應(yīng)用；表面配位化學；高靈敏度傳感分析技術(shù)等。
社會兼職
物理化學研究所所長，中國物理學會光散射專業(yè)委員會委員，副秘書長，<<光散射學報>>編委。
人物成就
主持四項國家自然科學基金項目，聯(lián)合主持一項國家自然科學重點基金，主持科技部儀器專項子任務(wù)一項及多項省部級基金項目。在國內(nèi)外核心化學期刊如Chem. Commun., Langmuir; J. Phys. Chem. C等發(fā)表正式論文80多篇，曾獲教育部科技進步一等獎(2002年)及江蘇省科學技術(shù)進步獎二等獎(2004年)。
