演繹經(jīng)歷
盡管出生在邁阿密，但西德尼·波蒂埃卻是巴哈馬群島凱特島的本土人，父親是一名農民。自幼家境貧賽的西德尼幾乎沒受過正規(guī)教育，15歲的時候他被送往邁阿密，以杜絕他初露苗頭的不良行為。18歲他來到紐約，在社會最底層從事粗重勞動。幾經(jīng)努力他終于被美國NegroTheatre錄取，參演了百老匯劇《Lysistrata》獲得極佳評論。1949年他經(jīng)過斟酌，放棄舞臺劇主演的位置接拍了影片《無路可走》（NoWayOut），他在片中的表現(xiàn)為他贏得了更多角色，每一部影片都讓他杰出黑人演員的地位更進一步，但他飾演的角色無論在趣味還是顯著程度上仍然不及白人演員。此后的七年間，他拒絕了多個丑化黑人的角色，并逐漸在黑人演員少有建樹的主演領域確立了自己地位。
1945年首次在影片《那佛羅少年》中亮相，后偶爾在一些影片中跑龍?zhí)住?950年的《走投無路》是他首部主演的影片。后又主演了《猜猜誰來吃晚餐》，《炎熱的夏夜》等優(yōu)秀影片。80年代又執(zhí)導了多部優(yōu)秀喜劇片，令他一度成為熱門的“喜劇導演”。在幕前消失多年后，1987年以《美蘇間諜戰(zhàn)》得出。
1958年影片《逃獄驚魂》（TheDefiantOnes）為他贏得了首個奧斯卡最佳男演員提名，5年后他憑借《原野百合花》（LiliesoftheField）摘得影帝桂冠，成為首位獲此殊榮的黑人演員。
除了銀幕和舞臺，波蒂埃還是一位積極的民權運動人士，他在《猜猜誰來吃晚餐》（GuessWho’sComingtoDinner）、《吾愛吾師》（ToSir,withLove）中的角色是他沖破黑人與白人之間社會障礙的界標。他的才華、良知、正直、內在的可愛讓他獲得與白人明星相齊的地位。70年代他在導演和制片人領域都取得相當?shù)某晒�，盡管他在銀幕亮相的機會越來越少，他仍然保持了20世紀美國影壇最受歡迎和熱愛的演員地位。
