　　4 Non Blondes成立于1989年，美國的San Francisco市，當時Christa Hillhouse（貝司手）和Shaunna Hall（吉他手）同為室友，他們當時和Wanda Day（鼓手）想組一個臨時性的樂隊，但缺一個主唱，Christa在一個名為Nightbreak的俱樂部的舞臺上發(fā)現(xiàn)了Linda Perry，他立刻被Linda那充滿力量和夢幻般的嗓音迷住了，于是他邀請Linda擔當他們樂隊的主唱，Linda當時并未當回事，直到她親眼看到了他們三位的現(xiàn)場演出后，才決定加入樂隊，這支樂隊的首場演出是在1989年10月17日Nightbreak俱樂部里一個每周固定節(jié)目“Female Trouble”里，這個節(jié)目推出的樂隊都是以女性為核心的樂隊，如：She Devils, Spokepoker, Stone Fox, Mermaid Tattoo, Lovedog……這些樂隊都很不錯，音樂也很猛烈。這個俱樂部也是整個SF市最好的，里面都是有著搖滾激情的人。4NB在這里度過愉快的時期，并開始在城市里尋找其他的演出機會。

　　4NB的早期音樂風格基本上都是狂躁的punk樂，Wanda擊打出硬核朋克的鼓聲，Linda爆炸般的嗓音，Christa的貝司始終來回于硬核和瘋克之間，而Shaunna的3和弦吉他技術構筑了整個4NB早期的主要音樂風格，隨著樂隊演出機會的增加，他們的名聲也越來越響亮。但隨之而來的批評也越來越多，樂隊似乎要用更大的噪音去抵抗一些刺耳的噓聲和惡意的詆毀�！霸诋敃r，并不是有現(xiàn)在這么多的女性活躍在搖滾舞臺上，因此我們受到了許多其他樂隊或俱樂部里的各類人等的嘲笑和諷刺。這促使我們更努力地投入到音樂中，我們每周都有那么四、五天每天重復聽3、4個小時的音樂，當某人想說些屁話來譏笑我們時，我們就會在舞臺上愉快地用音樂去還擊他。我已經彈了15年琴了，所以我們樂隊里每一個人都對自己的音樂技術和水平充滿了自信。”

　　在早期的樂隊詞曲創(chuàng)作中，幾乎都是由Shaunna Hall一人包辦，也許只有樂隊創(chuàng)作的第一首歌“Whole lotta love”例外。但在不久后，Linda開始成為樂隊詞曲創(chuàng)作的核心，Wanda和Christa一般喜歡在排練前彈彈groove來熱身。有時他們這些即興彈奏的片段就成了樂隊的歌曲。然后由Linda配好詞，如歌曲“Old Mr Heffer”“No place like home”就是這樣創(chuàng)作出來的。Linda有時也和Shaunna共同創(chuàng)作一些歌曲，但通常她喜歡獨自一人冥思苦想。每當創(chuàng)作出一些新的音樂作品時，他們都會把它立刻放在晚上的演出里。但有時4NB會很玩笑地把剛學會的一首歌加入到演出節(jié)目中，由于此時4NB樂隊并不能靠俱樂部演出來維持生活，他們四人白天都需要工作，而Linda是樂隊里第一個辭退餐館的女招待工作而專心投入到音樂中來的，因為她對每日清晨縈繞在耳邊的鈴聲和嘈雜的工作厭倦透了。不久，Charista也辭去了他的固定工作，他已經在白日會計師夜里音樂家的角色變換中持續(xù)了十年了。四人陸續(xù)都辭去自己的工作，開始從當初業(yè)余心態(tài)去玩音樂中轉變?yōu)橐源藶槁殬I(yè)的專業(yè)態(tài)度。但他們的音樂之旅并不順利，錄制的小樣并未得到唱片公司的垂青，在經濟上陷入了窘迫之境，他們不久就負債累累，這幾乎也是許多搖滾樂隊成立之初的慣例。
