生于英國(guó)。曾在倫敦戲劇藝術(shù)學(xué)院求學(xué)。1920年在老維克劇團(tuán)首次登上舞臺(tái)。1931年在英國(guó)從事電影工作，后受福斯影片公司之邀去好萊塢拍片。三十年代，她主演了影片《今古傳奇》（1933）、《艾德溫．德魯?shù)轮浴罚?935）和《告密者》（1935）。二戰(zhàn)后，她主要參加電視劇演出。
