James于1964年6月3日，出生在英國Somerset的Taunton。16歲離開學校，曾在養(yǎng)豬場工作，也在這段時間游歷歐洲。18歲進入大學，學習表演。曾與同時演員的Holly Aird結(jié)婚，育有一子，但是他們在2002年的5月就離婚了。
他的兒子叫Joseph，1997年出生�，F(xiàn)在James住在倫敦，離他兒子的住處大約三個小時的車程。
2005年大片《V字仇殺》的男主角原定是由James來扮演，但后來由于不明原因，他離開的劇組。
2007年，除了《羅馬》以外，James沒有接太多的工作。但是這一部戲已經(jīng)足夠了!
