1989年，Will.i.am(William Adams)和Apl.de.ap(Allen Pineda)在洛杉磯相遇且開始RAP及演出。在得到

Jerry Heller（Eazy-E的老板）的外甥賞識(shí)之后，這對(duì)組合與Ruthless唱片簽約（該公司由Eazy-E管理）。同時(shí)簽約的還有他們的一個(gè)朋友——Dante Santiago。他們將這三人的組合稱作Atban Klann。他們的首張專輯從未出版，因?yàn)楣菊J(rèn)為該張專輯的正面主題不會(huì)受到市場(chǎng)及大眾的歡迎。在Eazy-E于1995年因艾滋病死去之后，Dante Santiago推出Atban Klann，另兩人重組成黑眼豆豆。Will.i.am曾在專輯《Monkey Business》的封面上解釋取這個(gè)名字的原因：“黑眼豆豆是靈魂的食物”。這個(gè)組合新加進(jìn)了成員Taboo（Jaime Gomez），并邀請(qǐng)Kim Hill作樂隊(duì)的固定背景和聲。

Will.i.am在經(jīng)歷樂團(tuán)晉升的歷史之后，決定將全部精力放在音樂上，于是幫人制作了許多大熱歌曲，例如和Justin Timberlake，Pussycat Dolls等人的合作，以及Fergie的個(gè)人大碟，他都是盡心盡力做好。于是，他在2001和2003年發(fā)行兩張很好但并未為人所知的個(gè)人專輯后，又有了發(fā)行一張個(gè)人專輯的念頭，這樣我們就迎來了《Songs About Girls》。
