1991年8月畢業(yè)后在中國(guó)船舶總公司研究院工作。
1992年9月赴美國(guó)攻讀博士學(xué)位。
1995年博士畢業(yè)后在美國(guó)芝加哥工作，任大學(xué)教授。
之前執(zhí)教于美國(guó)伊利諾伊理工斯圖沃特商學(xué)院，享有終身教職。
曾任教于香港科技大學(xué)、北京大學(xué)、中歐商學(xué)院(CEIBS)。
曾任長(zhǎng)江商學(xué)院副院長(zhǎng)，戰(zhàn)略創(chuàng)新與創(chuàng)業(yè)管理實(shí)踐教授。
2017年3月16日下午，廖建文已確認(rèn)從長(zhǎng)江商學(xué)院離職。
2017年4月17日，京東集團(tuán)宣布，任命廖建文擔(dān)任京東集團(tuán)首席戰(zhàn)略官（CSO）。
2018年2月8日，任中國(guó)聯(lián)通(600050)公司第六屆董事會(huì)非獨(dú)立董事。

學(xué)術(shù)成就
廖建文教授以在戰(zhàn)略、創(chuàng)新和創(chuàng)業(yè)領(lǐng)域的跨學(xué)科研究而知名。他積極參與了創(chuàng)業(yè)動(dòng)力定組研究計(jì)劃 (Panel Study of Entrepreneurial Dynamics)，這是對(duì)美國(guó)新興企業(yè)家以及合資創(chuàng)業(yè)的第一次大規(guī)模、橫向研究。他曾在《戰(zhàn)略企業(yè)家雜志》、《企業(yè)創(chuàng)業(yè)學(xué)雜志》、《創(chuàng)業(yè)理論與實(shí)踐》、《小企業(yè)管理期刊》、《小企業(yè)經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)》以及《高新技術(shù)管理研究期刊》上發(fā)表30篇學(xué)術(shù)論文。他的一篇研究報(bào)告曾被《小企業(yè)經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)》選為特寫(xiě)文章。他的研究和教學(xué)成果為其贏得了眾多獎(jiǎng)勵(lì)和榮譽(yù)，其中包括美國(guó)小型企業(yè)管理局授予的研究經(jīng)費(fèi)獎(jiǎng)勵(lì)（2007、2008）以及2009年度的伊利諾伊理工斯圖沃特商學(xué)院杰出教學(xué)獎(jiǎng)。
