1978年，應著名影星杰克·尼科爾森之邀，在他執(zhí)導并主演的影片《到南方去》里擔任角色，從此步入影壇。1979年主演了影片《兩世奇人》。該片描寫十九世紀的摧花手杰克乘坐時光機器逃到了二十世紀的舊金山，而發(fā)明此機器的科幻小說家威爾斯遂追蹤而至，一邊在茫茫人海中尋找杰克，一邊跟銀行女職員發(fā)生隔代之戀，最后杰克以殺死其女友作為威協(xié)。斯廷伯根飾女職員一角十分成功，特別是當她看到未來的報紙而預知杰克殺人陰謀這壓軸高潮演得極其緊張曲折。
1980年，這位新秀和上述一片的男主演、英國著名影星馬爾柯姆·麥克道威爾結(jié)婚。同年，她應名導演喬納森·丹姆之邀，參加了《梅爾文與霍華德》（Melvin and Howard）一片的拍攝。這是一部具有諷刺意味的怪誕劇，故事講一個叫梅爾文的賭棍和百萬富翁霍華德賭錢，梅爾文老是輸，連自己的老婆也抵押進去，但那個富翁最后卻按照摩門教徒的旨意，把自己的一大筆錢約一百五十六萬美元全送給了梅爾文。斯汀伯根就扮演這個不幸的老婆，她同梅爾文結(jié)婚離婚了兩次，由于出色的表演，斯汀伯根榮獲奧斯卡獎最佳女配角。
