人物經歷
1984年畢業(yè)于蘭州大學生物系，獲學士學位。1989年于中國科學院動物研究所獲博士學位。1989年至2008年于中國科學院動物研究所，歷任助研、副研、正研、副所長、所長。期間曾先后到英國約克大學、美國農業(yè)部野生動物研究中心、澳大利亞CSIRO可持續(xù)生態(tài)所進行學術訪問。
2012年11月19日，免去中國科學院生命科學與生物技術局局長職務（保留正局級待遇）。
社會兼職
兼任國際動物學會（ISZS）副主席，國際生物科學聯(lián)合會（IUBS）執(zhí)委，中國動物學會和中國生態(tài)學會副理事長，獸類學會理事長，《Integrative Zoology》主編、SCI期刊《Wildlife Research》編委。
研究方向
從行為生態(tài)學、分子生態(tài)學、生理生態(tài)學、種群生態(tài)學和全球生態(tài)學的角度，研究鼠類等有害生物種群暴發(fā)成災規(guī)律與調節(jié)機制、鼠類與植物及疾病的關系及無公害、可持續(xù)控制技術與策略，為生物災害預警和綜合治理以及退化生態(tài)系統(tǒng)恢復重建提供技術支撐和科學依據(jù)。
主要貢獻
發(fā)表學術論文200多篇，其中SCI論文70多篇。發(fā)現(xiàn)過去一千年間氣候變暖顯著降低了中國三大農業(yè)自然災害（旱災、澇災和蝗災），發(fā)現(xiàn)ENSO與我國、歐洲等國家鼠類種群動態(tài)密切關聯(lián)，發(fā)現(xiàn)密度依賴的互惠或合作有利競爭者共存，并提高競爭力等。
