Burton Watson

1925年生于紐約，1956年自哥倫比亞大學(xué)取得博士學(xué)位。華教授曾以福特基金會(huì)海外學(xué)人的身份在日本京都大學(xué)從事研究，并先後在京都大學(xué)、哥倫比亞大學(xué)及史丹福大學(xué)教授中國(guó)及日本語文。1979年榮獲哥倫比亞大學(xué)翻譯中心金牌獎(jiǎng)?wù)�；分別于1981年、1995年兩次榮獲美國(guó)筆會(huì)(PEN)翻譯獎(jiǎng)項(xiàng)。目前旅居日本。

華教授是譯叢顧問團(tuán)創(chuàng)始成員之一，1989-90間榮任譯叢學(xué)人。專注于中日文學(xué)的翻譯與研究，出版著作已逾20冊(cè)。其翻譯後漢書、詩經(jīng)及李白、白居易及陸游的詩作，分別刊登于「譯叢」第一期、第二十一及二十二期、第三十三及三十四期、和第四十九期；譯著「Records of the Grand Historian」，收錄在譯叢叢書系列中。

除了譯詩以外， 他還翻譯了中國(guó)古代哲學(xué)著作Xunzi: Basic Writings(《荀子》)( 1963)、Mo Tzu: Basic Writings(《墨子》)( 1963)、Zhuangzi(《莊子》)(1964)等；佛學(xué)著作The Vimalakirti Sutra(《維摩經(jīng)》)( 1993)、The Lotus Sutra(《法華經(jīng)》)（1997）、The Zen Teachings of Master Lin-Chi（《臨濟(jì)路》）（1999）等；史學(xué)著作Records of the Grand Historian（《史記》）（1961）、Courtier and Commoner in Ancient China: Selections from the History of the Former Han by Pan Ku（《漢書》）（1974）、The Tso Chuan: Selections from China’s Oldest Narrative History（《左傳》）（1989）等。

他翻譯的《莊子》被收入大中華文庫出版，同時(shí)也入選The Norton Anthology of World Masterpieces（《諾頓世界名著選集》）（1997），成為中國(guó)典籍在美國(guó)譯介的經(jīng)典之作。

華茲生是極受歡迎的亞洲語文翻譯名家，他的文字平易而優(yōu)雅，很適合翻譯王維、寒山、白居易、蘇軾及陸游的作品。
