人物生平
梅維恒（Victor H. Mair）教授，1943年出生。
早年畢業(yè)于 達(dá)特茅斯學(xué)院。于1965年加入美國(guó) 和平隊(duì)（US Peace Corps），在 尼泊爾服役兩年。1967年秋，他進(jìn)入華盛頓大學(xué)學(xué)習(xí)印度佛經(jīng)、中印佛教、藏文及梵文。翌年，他留學(xué)英國(guó) 倫敦大學(xué)亞非學(xué)院，學(xué)習(xí)梵文。后來(lái)，他入 哈佛大學(xué)東亞語(yǔ)言及文明系深造，于1976年獲得博士學(xué)位，并留校任教。1979年起，他轉(zhuǎn)任賓夕法尼亞大學(xué)。他現(xiàn)為賓大亞洲及中東研究系教授、賓大學(xué)考古及人類學(xué)博物館顧問(wèn)，同時(shí)也在京都大學(xué)、香港大學(xué)、北京大學(xué)、四川大學(xué)等多所高校兼任教職。

梅維恒教授的研究領(lǐng)域包括中國(guó)語(yǔ)言文學(xué)、中古史、敦煌學(xué)。
主要成就
他的《唐代變文：佛教對(duì)中國(guó)白話小說(shuō)及戲曲產(chǎn)生的貢獻(xiàn)之研究》、《繪畫(huà)與表演：中國(guó)的看圖講故事和它的印度起源》、《敦煌通俗敘事文學(xué)作品》等諸多著作都在中西學(xué)界引起了強(qiáng)烈反響。梅維恒教授轉(zhuǎn)向在中國(guó)新疆塔克拉瑪干沙漠進(jìn)行考古研究，發(fā)現(xiàn)了塔克拉瑪干沙漠迄今為止最早的文明遺跡。這個(gè)生存于公元前2000年至公元200年間的文明，為重新理解中國(guó)歷史、中西交通、歐亞文化交流史開(kāi)啟了新的視角。
