“國際自然保護(hù)聯(lián)盟IUCN－物種生存委員會SSC－國際鳥類聯(lián)盟”松雞科專家委員會委員，“中國動物學(xué)會鳥類學(xué)分會”副理事長。主要研究目標(biāo)是中國森林鳥類的種群生態(tài)學(xué)、行為生態(tài)學(xué)和進(jìn)化生物學(xué)，重點(diǎn)是我國青藏高原高山針葉林特有鳥類的起源、進(jìn)化、行為、生態(tài)及保護(hù)研究。

1993年，與挪威自然研究院合作開展“中國長白山與斯堪第納維亞花尾榛雞的行為學(xué)及生態(tài)學(xué)的比較研究”；，1995－2002年德國合作開展“斑尾榛雞的生態(tài)學(xué)、行為學(xué)及景觀生態(tài)學(xué)研究” ；2001－2004年與美國、加拿大合作開展“中加美噪鴉屬鳥類合作研究”；1999年以來與德國美因茨大學(xué)開展“中德雀形目鳥類分布、分類及生態(tài)學(xué)合作研究”；2003年以來瑞典烏薩拉大學(xué)合作開展“中國西南山地森林鳥類多樣性研究”。2002年作為大會主席，在北京主持召開了 “第九屆國際松雞科研討會”；在“第23屆國際鳥類學(xué)大會”上與德國Jochen Martens教授共同主持了“中國喜馬拉雅山地區(qū)特有鳥類的進(jìn)化生物學(xué)”專題研討會。主要承擔(dān)國家自然科學(xué)基金重大國際合作項(xiàng)目“青藏高原森林特有鳥類的行為、生態(tài)和進(jìn)化生物學(xué)研究”（2006－2009年），并與德國Mainz大學(xué)，瑞典Uppsala大學(xué)，挪威大學(xué)，加拿大等國科學(xué)院開展了廣泛的國際合作。
