1979年在關肇直、吳大任教授推薦下赴瑞典皇家科學院Mittag-Leffler數(shù)學研究所進修，由于科研有突出成就，在該所所長，1978-1982屆國際數(shù)學會主席卡列松教授和著名泛函專家恩福羅教授舉薦下，破格獲博士學位，成為新中國派往西方學者中第一個獲數(shù)學博士者。

　　主要研究巴拿赫空間上的算子（特別是“等距”算子）與泛函（特別是“擬次加”泛函）理論，獨立發(fā)表論文50余篇，出版數(shù)學專著4本。1981年回國后（除在美作訪問教授和訪問學者幾年外）一直指導碩、博士生，并在本科及研究生教學第一線工作。從無到有地帶出一支有特色，并在國內外有影響的巴拿赫空間理論和泛函分析的學術隊伍；有的已在國際學術上享有盛名。由于他在培養(yǎng)研究生及科研上的成就，曾多次獲校，天津市的教學和科研獎，特別地，1989年以“培養(yǎng)高質量數(shù)學研究生”成果獲首屆《教學成果優(yōu)秀獎》國家級獎，1990年因培養(yǎng)少數(shù)民族地區(qū)年輕數(shù)學教師和研究生成績突出獲國家民委《民族團結，進步先進個人獎》。并以科研成果，1991年獲國家教委《科技進步獎》，1998年獲天津市《科技進步獎》（首屆“自然科學獎”）。1999年獲天津市“九五”立功獎章。2000年作為“基礎數(shù)學人才培養(yǎng)基地”成員之一獲“天津市特等模范集體”。本人課“泛函分析”獲2000年“國家理科基地名牌課程項目”。2001年獲“寶鋼優(yōu)秀教師獎”。其所寫的專著《巴拿赫空間引論》被（臺灣）“九章數(shù)學基金會”在其《讓數(shù)學名著永恒》項目首選為重版書目，并于1997年和1999年由“科學出版社”再版。自1987年來一直承擔國家自然科學基金及國家教委博士點基金項目，并任項目負責人。

　　曾任南開大學教務長、數(shù)學系主任、天津市數(shù)學會副理事長、中國數(shù)學會教育委員。連續(xù)四屆任天津市政協(xié)常委至今，并連任兩屆市政協(xié)教育文化委員會及科技教育委員會副主任至今。國務院“政府特殊津貼”科技人員。并兼任國內一些數(shù)學刊物的編委和國外一些著名數(shù)學摘刊的特邀評論員。
