約瑟夫·科頓是那種永遠成不了天皇巨星、進不了前10名但卻也令人永遠無法忘懷的演員，他就靠在那里吸著煙，溫情而饒有意味地用眼角余光看著你，像一座醞釀爆發(fā)的休眠火山，你不知道什么時候會爆發(fā)，一旦爆發(fā)，你會心甘情愿被他灼人的熱能所熔化。
我目前能找到的科頓的資料很少，只知道他曾就讀于華盛頓�？寺硌輰W校。1930年開始在百老匯登臺演出；1937年，他參加奧遜*威爾斯的水星劇團，兩年之后在百老匯風行一時的《費城故事》中與凱瑟琳．赫本合作演出。1938年在影片《約翰遜太多了》中初登銀幕，此后相繼主演了《公民凱恩》、《安巴遜大族》、《疑影》、《第三人》等多部著名影片。1948年，他主演的《珍妮的畫像》獲得了威尼斯國際電影節(jié)最佳男主角獎。1958年，在出演了《邪惡之觸》后，慢慢淡出影壇。于1994年2月6日去世，終年八十九歲。
約瑟夫·科頓是從來沒有得到奧斯卡提名的著名美國演員，這不禁讓人覺得不可思議，但聯想到奧遜·威爾斯、查理·卓別林也是演技一流，同樣被奧斯卡棄之如履，便不再為科頓感到惋惜，他的才華勿需奧斯卡來證明。
