1982年畢業(yè)于華中農(nóng)業(yè)大學(xué)微生物專業(yè)。1982年至1987年在中國農(nóng)業(yè)科學(xué)院原子能利用研究所任研究實(shí)習(xí)員；1987年至2005年供職于中國科學(xué)院武漢植物研究所，技術(shù)職務(wù)歷任助理研究員（1987）、副研究員（1992）、研究員（2000）、首席研究員（2001）；2000年任碩導(dǎo)，2003年任博導(dǎo)；行政職務(wù)歷任副處長（1991）、所長助理兼研究室主任（2000）、副所長兼中心主任（2001）；

2006年起引進(jìn)至武漢大學(xué)藥學(xué)院，先后任教授、博導(dǎo)、教授委員會(huì)副主任（2006）、副院長（2007）、中藥與天然藥物研究所所長（2008）。

2001年至2010年，分別到新西蘭皇家科學(xué)院（2001）、馬來西亞國家醫(yī)學(xué)研究所（2002）、法國國家健康與醫(yī)學(xué)研究院（2003）、巴基斯坦卡拉奇大學(xué)H.E.J化學(xué)研究所（2005）、美國King Pharmaceuticals, Inc.（2007）、日本富山大學(xué)（2008）、英國劍橋大學(xué)（2009）、美國奧本大學(xué)（2009）和俄羅斯喀山大學(xué)（2010）作訪問學(xué)者或合作交流。
