2015年60歲的湯華燊是越南華裔，24歲抵澳。因澳大利亞聯(lián)邦政府在財政預算案中削減科研經(jīng)費，他在2014年9月被澳大利亞聯(lián)邦科學和產(chǎn)業(yè)研究組織裁退，但他仍以不授薪榮譽研究員身份繼續(xù)工作，包括帶一名博士后學生。在拒絕多所澳大利亞大學的邀請后，他日前選擇接受了莫納什大學化學院特聘教授的5年合約。

據(jù)《悉尼先驅(qū)晨報》報道，本月25日，湯華燊和其他21位科學家一起，在堪培拉出席了入選科學院的相關(guān)儀式，其中包括他與之長期合作的有機化學家埃西奧·里卡多和格雷姆·莫德。他們3人曾共同發(fā)表超過100篇科研論文，研發(fā)成果被包括歐萊雅、IBM和杜邦公司在內(nèi)的全球約60個公司廣泛應用，他們也因此于2014年獲頒克洛斯獎。
