2015年60歲的湯華燊是越南華裔，24歲抵澳。因澳大利亞聯(lián)邦政府在財(cái)政預(yù)算案中削減科研經(jīng)費(fèi)，他在2014年9月被澳大利亞聯(lián)邦科學(xué)和產(chǎn)業(yè)研究組織裁退，但他仍以不授薪榮譽(yù)研究員身份繼續(xù)工作，包括帶一名博士后學(xué)生。在拒絕多所澳大利亞大學(xué)的邀請(qǐng)后，他日前選擇接受了莫納什大學(xué)化學(xué)院特聘教授的5年合約。

據(jù)《悉尼先驅(qū)晨報(bào)》報(bào)道，本月25日，湯華燊和其他21位科學(xué)家一起，在堪培拉出席了入選科學(xué)院的相關(guān)儀式，其中包括他與之長(zhǎng)期合作的有機(jī)化學(xué)家埃西奧·里卡多和格雷姆·莫德。他們3人曾共同發(fā)表超過(guò)100篇科研論文，研發(fā)成果被包括歐萊雅、IBM和杜邦公司在內(nèi)的全球約60個(gè)公司廣泛應(yīng)用，他們也因此于2014年獲頒克洛斯獎(jiǎng)。
