生于英格蘭，12歲時隨家遷居美國，后入讀奧克蘭大學新聞系。1976年開始與吉姆．漢森合作多部電視木偶戲，得到觀眾的熱烈歡迎，陸續(xù)榮獲三次艾美獎。1979年主演了電影《木偶電影》，以后在他升任導演期間也曾演過幾部影片，如《龍虎雙霸天》、《美國狼人在倫敦》等。1983年與漢森聯(lián)合導演了木偶電影《魔水晶》，開始踏入導演之門。他的導演作品大都走喜劇路線，如《騙心大少》，《天生一對寶》、《大制騙家》等。2001年執(zhí)導了犯罪動作片《大買賣》，擁有馬龍．白蘭度等幾位巨星的強大演員陣容。

尼克·威爾斯（羅伯特·德·尼羅）是一個技藝高超、名滿江湖的國際大盜，不過他早已金盆洗手了，和女朋友戴安（安吉拉·貝塞特）一起經(jīng)營著他們的合法營生：蒙特利爾的一家爵士樂俱樂部�？墒�，在他的老朋友兼銷贓人馬克斯（馬龍·白蘭度）卻不愿看到他就這樣退出江湖，在他的威逼利誘下，尼克迫不得已重拾老本行，然而這還不算最糟糕的。更遭的是，尼克這次行動必須破了他入行幾十年來的兩條老規(guī)矩：一是單獨行動；二是不在居住地附近動手。
杰基·泰勒（愛德華·諾頓）是是馬克斯給尼克安排的幫手，是個野心勃勃而且很有天賦的新手。杰基之所以找到尼克，是想利用他那手爆破保險箱的絕技幫助自己完成入行以來的第一筆大買賣：盜竊蒙特利爾海關大樓墻壁里藏著的價值數(shù)千萬美元的繳獲物——這也是破壞尼克第二條規(guī)矩的原因。
