烏比·哥德堡(Whoopi Goldberg)，1955年11月13日生于曼哈頓的切爾西區(qū)。起初在一家殯葬服務(wù)公司上班，后來在百老匯打雜工時(shí)還當(dāng)過磚匠。移居加州后和“自燃”等團(tuán)體進(jìn)行過合作，以喜劇演員的身份磨練演技。為HBO拍一個(gè)專題片時(shí)，開始引起外界關(guān)注。以演出內(nèi)容豐富多彩著稱于世，前后結(jié)過3次婚，曾經(jīng)沉迷于毒品。
1985年擔(dān)綱主演《紫色》(The Color Purple)，獲得影評(píng)界諸多贊譽(yù)，并因此獲奧斯卡提名，從此成為好萊塢著名女星。上世紀(jì)80年代后期參加了幾部公式化喜劇片的拍攝，如《夜賊》(Burglar)、《東西戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)》(Jumpin’ Jack Flash)等。1990年，烏比·哥德堡參拍后來票房收入驚人的《人鬼情未了》(Ghost)一片，捧得一座奧斯卡最佳女配角獎(jiǎng)杯，成為家喻戶曉的好萊塢明星。90年代初期，烏比的演藝事業(yè)達(dá)到了她一生的巔峰。作為1967年老電影《星際迷航記》(Star Trek)的鐵桿影迷，她深感榮幸地接拍了《星際迷航記之新一代》(Star Trek: The Next Generation)一片。1992年，她又主演了《修女也瘋狂》(Sister Act)，影片上映后極為賣座。她所扮演的劇中人物，外表粗俗，內(nèi)心卻真誠(chéng)可愛，深得觀眾喜愛。1993年她乘勝追擊，主演了《修女也瘋狂2》(Sister Act: Back in the Habit)，雖然觀眾反響良好，但始終無法與《修女也瘋狂》的藝術(shù)水平相媲美。
