生于馬薩諸塞州斯旺普史特。青年時(shí)代學(xué)工程，但卻選了表演作為職業(yè)。最初是在雜耍劇團(tuán)和固定劇團(tuán)當(dāng)演

員。1923年，他到好萊塢，由于刻苦努力、善于扮演各種角色，終于成為好萊塢一位優(yōu)秀而有成就的性格演員，他演出的影片達(dá)一百部以上。他曾三獲奧斯卡最佳男配角金像獎(jiǎng)，其中包括第一尊最佳男配角金像獎(jiǎng)。
