動物學(xué)家。昆明理工大學(xué)教授。1950年6月出生于云南昆明，籍貫安徽合肥。1982年畢業(yè)于云南大學(xué)，獲學(xué)士學(xué)位。2017年當(dāng)選為中國科學(xué)院院士�，F(xiàn)任昆明理工大學(xué)靈長類轉(zhuǎn)化醫(yī)學(xué)研究院院長。云南省動物生殖生物學(xué)重點(diǎn)實驗室"主任，研究員，博士研究生導(dǎo)師。

研究方向：從事靈長類生物學(xué) 生殖發(fā)育生物學(xué)研究 　　經(jīng)歷:1985-1987年赴美國俄勒崗靈長類研究中心和華盛頓史密研究院從事神經(jīng)生殖內(nèi)分泌和胚胎移殖研究。1995-1996,1997年為美國威斯康星大學(xué)，動物醫(yī)學(xué)與生物化學(xué)系客座教授。96年與威斯康星靈長類研究中心在昆明動物研究所共建了中--美靈長類生物學(xué)聯(lián)合實驗室, 為該實驗室中方主任，以及中科院與云南省共建"云南省動物生殖生物學(xué)重點(diǎn)實驗室"主任。 　　從事生殖發(fā)育生物學(xué)研究。以非人靈長類為模式動物進(jìn)行卵母細(xì)胞的成熟調(diào)控機(jī)制, 胚胎的早期發(fā)育分化以及相關(guān)生殖生物技術(shù),如生殖細(xì)胞(卵、精子和胚胎)的凍存, 胚胎移植，動物克隆和靈長類胚胎干細(xì)胞研究。率先在國際上建立了獼猴卵成熟的無血清培養(yǎng)體系，并發(fā)現(xiàn)激素、能量物質(zhì)和生殖周期對卵成熟和胚胎早期發(fā)育的影響。卵成熟和受精卵發(fā)育過程中核與質(zhì)的相互作用——再程序化（Reprogram）機(jī)制為研究重點(diǎn)。此外, 積極倡導(dǎo)和發(fā)展保護(hù)生物學(xué)的新的學(xué)科增長點(diǎn), 與美國威斯康星大學(xué)合作共同培養(yǎng)營養(yǎng)生態(tài)學(xué)博士研究生。

在國內(nèi)外核心刊物上發(fā)表論文70多篇,其中SCI論文50余篇。任國際自然保護(hù)聯(lián)盟物種存活委員會(IUCN/SSC)靈長類專家組,圈養(yǎng)保護(hù)繁殖專家組委員,中國實驗動物學(xué)會靈長類專業(yè)委員會主任，中國生殖生物學(xué)會理事, <<獸類學(xué)報>>, <<應(yīng)用與環(huán)境生物學(xué)報>>, <<動物學(xué)研究>>編委等, 已招收培養(yǎng)博士生12人, 碩士生12人。

2017年11月，2017年新當(dāng)選中國科學(xué)院院士名單公布，昆明理工大學(xué)靈長類轉(zhuǎn)化醫(yī)學(xué)研究院院長季維智當(dāng)選生命科學(xué)和醫(yī)學(xué)學(xué)部院士。

2019年11月，獲得2019年何梁何利基金科學(xué)與技術(shù)進(jìn)步獎（生命科學(xué)獎）。
