沃爾夫最知名也最受推崇的成就，即是其所撰寫的數(shù)冊重量級小說系列The Book of the New Sun。故事背景為荒涼的、遙遠(yuǎn)的未來世界(與Jack Vance的Dying Earth系列相似，沃爾夫即被此書啟發(fā)與影響)。故事情節(jié)是描述Severian這位拷打者的見習(xí)生，因?qū)λ佬谭革@露同情心的罪刑而被流放。此系列小說出版了數(shù)次，包含1980年的The Shadow of theTorturer、1981年的The Claw of the Conciliator都獲得了星云獎的"最佳小說獎"。1982年出版The Sword of the Lictor、1983年The Citadel of the Autarch以及本系列完結(jié)篇1987年的The Urth of the New Sun。結(jié)局有些許松散，但一般認(rèn)為那是分開的創(chuàng)作。許多沃爾夫關(guān)于The Book of the New Sun的寫作紀(jì)錄則是發(fā)表于1982年的The Castle of the Otter(這篇題目是提到了在Locus雜志對于第四集的印刷錯誤)。

沃爾夫也曾撰寫多部獨(dú)立背景的小說，他第一本長篇小說作品Operation Ares是由Berkley Books在1970年出版，但并未成功。他接續(xù)著寫的兩部長篇小說Peace與The Fifth Head of Cerberus則獲得極高的推崇。前一本看似隨意的敘事法描寫了"Alden Dennis Weer"這位有著許多秘密的男人，在神秘的狀況下回顧了自己的一生。著作The Fifth Head of Cerberus是三部小說的總集（也可說是一本分成三大部分的小說），故事情節(jié)是關(guān)于殖民地居民的回憶與每個人天生的個性。在第一部份的故事是本書命名的由來，也獲得了星云獎的"最佳小說獎"肯定。

沃爾夫經(jīng)常創(chuàng)造"不肯定的敘事手法"來描述他的故事。根據(jù)沃爾夫的說法是因?yàn)椋?quot;真實(shí)的人們的確在所有時間里都是不可靠的敘事人，即使他們嘗試要讓自己的敘述變的可靠。"有時是因?yàn)檫@個人的天真與單純(Pandora by Holly Hollander、The Knight)，或并不是特別的具有智慧(There Are Doors)，或者是因?yàn)椴粫�永遠(yuǎn)是誠實(shí)的(The Book of the New Sun)，或者是正遭受重癥的痛苦(Latroin Soldier of the Mist，在24小時內(nèi)就會馬上忘記所有的事情。)

有些讀者發(fā)現(xiàn)沃爾夫"不肯定的敘事手法"使人感到困惑，此一觀點(diǎn)是在于如果讀者不能信任其敘述，那也就不能定義文章的主題涵意。也有人認(rèn)為，這樣的手法會要求讀者更下功夫，這樣轉(zhuǎn)意的方式反而能創(chuàng)造了更多的空間，能讓讀者自行去發(fā)現(xiàn)和探索更多的意義，沃爾夫論述鼓舞了各種類型的讀者。他本人曾在給尼爾·蓋曼的信件里說到："我對好的文學(xué)的定義，是能夠給有教育及經(jīng)驗(yàn)的讀者閱讀的內(nèi)容，并且在重新閱讀時仍能增加趣味。"

他較為人所知的工程成就是研發(fā)了用于品客洋芋片產(chǎn)品的的機(jī)械，特別是在于調(diào)理洋芋片的相關(guān)機(jī)器。他現(xiàn)在居住于美國伊利諾伊州的rington地區(qū)，此地為芝加哥的郊區(qū)地帶。吉恩·沃爾夫曾在自傳中透露他是美國20世紀(jì)初的小說家湯瑪士·沃爾夫(Thomas Wolfe)的遠(yuǎn)親。

即使并不是最暢銷的作者，沃爾夫仍取得書評與書迷高度的推崇，也被視為是最佳的科幻小說作者之一。的確，不論如何他也時常被稱為是仍在世最好的美國文學(xué)作家。曾獲獎的科幻小說作者M(jìn)ichael Swanwick就曾說："吉恩·沃爾夫是當(dāng)今仍在世的英文文學(xué)創(chuàng)作人中，最偉大的一位。讓我來這樣贊揚(yáng)：他就是在世的英語創(chuàng)作作者中最偉大的一位，我是真的這樣認(rèn)為。莎士比亞]是較有風(fēng)格的名作家、Melville對美國文學(xué)來說有更重要的地位、而查爾斯·狄更斯在創(chuàng)造人物上有神來之筆。但是若談到仍在世的作家，無人能及沃爾夫在文章上的天分與造詣。其創(chuàng)作有清澈的思想與深度的涵意。"
