遵循植物演化生物學(xué)的思想,從生命科學(xué)和環(huán)境科學(xué)兩個方面,研究陸地植物起源演化及其與全球環(huán)境變遷的相關(guān)關(guān)系。長期以來,通過研究植物演化過程中處于重要環(huán)節(jié)的類群,整體重建重要的絕滅類群,恢復(fù)植物演化序列,揭示其演化機(jī)制和規(guī)律;同時獲取生物演化事件和化石植物富含的環(huán)境和氣候信息,從生物學(xué)角度認(rèn)識環(huán)境演變過程和規(guī)律,認(rèn)識史前自然災(zāi)難,在長時間尺度上探索和理解全球變化趨勢。

已發(fā)表研究論文70多篇(其中約30篇發(fā)表在《美國植物學(xué)報》,英國《林奈植物學(xué)報》,《加拿大植物學(xué)報》,英國《古生物學(xué)報》,荷蘭《古植物學(xué)和孢粉學(xué)評論》,德國《古生物圖鑒》等國際SCI刊物上),專著2部,編著6部,論文被廣泛引用,包括被90年代美國教科書大量引用。
獲獎情況1) 李承森:做出突出貢獻(xiàn)的中國博士學(xué)位獲得者;1991年獲國家教委與國務(wù)院學(xué)位委聯(lián)合授予的榮譽稱號
