她的重要奇幻作品《地海傳說》系列，一舉奠定她在西方奇幻文學上的經(jīng)典地位。
《地海傳奇》六部曲橫跨三十余載，此作品常與另兩部西方奇幻經(jīng)典——托爾金的《魔戒三部曲》與劉易斯的《納尼亞年代記》相提并論，后兩者皆為美國兩大科幻獎項雨果獎與星云獎雙料得主。
生平
勒瑰恩出身學術(shù)家庭，父親是人類學家，母親是心理學家及作家，三位兄長都成為學者，均非常關(guān)注美國原住民文化。家中時常高朋滿座，除了知名學者、研究生之外，還有許多印第安人，套句勒瑰恩母親說的話，他們家就是「一整個世界」。在這樣富有學術(shù)氣氛的環(huán)境成長，勒瑰恩年紀輕輕即開始寫作，在11歲時便已向Magazine，Astounding Science Fiction 投稿，雖然不幸被退稿。1951年于哈佛大學的雷地克里夫?qū)W院取得學士學位，1952年于哥倫比亞大學取得碩士學位，并在大學任教。
她早期的作品并非科幻或奇幻小說，而是根基于真實事界的虛構(gòu)國度(Fictional Country)。大部分這些小說在當時都沒有被出版，但后來以合集方式收錄于Orsinian Tales 與Malafrena中。因為不受出版商青睞，她轉(zhuǎn)而嘗試她早期較感興趣的科幻小說，在1960年代漸漸寫出名聲。1969年《黑暗的左手》出版，獲頒雨果獎與星云獎，同時奠定她在文壇的地位。
2017年，憑借《文字是我的事業(yè)：關(guān)于生命與書》獲得第75屆雨果獎最佳相關(guān)作品獎。
文風
勒瑰恩的小說最有特色的是她對社會學與人類學的關(guān)懷。在勒瑰恩的科幻作品中，她經(jīng)常架空出一個相當真實但又與地球不相似的世界，與相當人性化的族群，并以這些完全迥異于地球的文化流暢地帶出她的主題。
她作品為分析對象的文學評論眾多，甚至出版專書探討。舉凡《地海傳說》的成長主題與道家思想、《黑暗的左手》的敘事方式與性別議題、《一無所有》的烏托邦與反烏托邦等等，皆對主流文學界產(chǎn)生重大影響。
勒瑰恩除了創(chuàng)作，更投入老子《道德經(jīng)》的英譯注解工作，耗時四十年之久，此版本推出之后獲得相當高的評價。她將老子思想融入創(chuàng)作，在一向以西方文明為骨干的奇幻、科幻小說中，發(fā)揮東方哲學的無為、相生與均衡概念。此外，《地海傳說》中的島嶼世界（相對于歐美的大陸世界）與骨架纖細、黑發(fā)深膚的民族（相對于西方人種的外貌），以及隱喻西方文明的侵略與破壞性格，這種「去西方中心」的敘述觀點與一般西洋奇幻文學形成強烈對比。
