或多或少促進(jìn)現(xiàn)代恐怖電影的革新導(dǎo)演喬治·A.·羅梅羅George A. Romero在孩提時代就對電影有濃厚的興趣，他用8毫米攝影機制作短片，并在1954年制作了首部長片 The Man From the Meteor（拍攝期間，曾因從屋頂扔落一個燃燒的假人而被捕）。大學(xué)畢業(yè)后，他和朋友組建了一家制作工商業(yè)電視短片的The Latent Image公司，并為真正的電影《活死人之夜》Night of the Living Dead （1968）籌足了資金。這部講述吃人僵尸的顆粒狀黑白恐怖片大獲成功，其營造恐怖氣氛的方法也影響了許多同類電影的后來者。但羅梅羅隨后的一些電影并不成功。于是在導(dǎo)演《馬丁》Martin （1978）之前，他制作了一系列一小時左右的體育記錄片。
羅梅羅沒有搬到好萊圬或紐約，而是決定呆在匹茲堡繼續(xù)制作非主流的電影。他經(jīng)常從久負(fù)盛名的卡內(nèi)基梅隆大學(xué)招收頗具天份的演員。Night of the Living Dead的續(xù)集電影《死亡黎明》Dawn of the Dead （1979） 在僵尸襲擊困在商店中的四個人的過程中，交集著恐怖，諷刺和社會評論。動作片《飛車敢死隊》Knightriders （1981）里節(jié)奏的變化給人一種深刻印象，也是Ed Harris早期擔(dān)綱主演的一部影片，在羅梅羅的恐怖影片中成為化裝大師的Tom Savini也在本片扮演頭號反角。接著羅梅羅又回到他的擅長恐怖套路去了。作品有《鬼作秀》Creepshow （1982,他跟恐怖小說大師斯蒂芬·金的首度合作） 《喪尸出籠》Day of the Dead （1985，第三集也是最差的一集），《幻海魔靈》Monkey Shines: An Experiment in Fear （1988），Two Evil Eyes （1990，其中一段）�！〈送�，1984年他推出長篇電視劇集Tales From the Darkside，并擔(dān)任執(zhí)行監(jiān)制；為《鬼作秀2》Creepshow 2 （1987）編寫腳本；在其長期合作伙伴Tom Savini導(dǎo)演的重拍片《惡夜僵尸》Night of the Living Dead （1990）中擔(dān)任執(zhí)行監(jiān)制，遺憾的是，這部重拍片只是更加證明原片是多么出色。
最近幾年，羅梅羅還和斯蒂芬·金合作了兩部影片《人鬼雙胞胎》Dark Half,The （1993）以及Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon,The（2001）。

其中在喬治·羅梅羅的電影中以喪尸為題材的電影最為耀眼，他可以說是世界喪尸電影之父。1968年，喬治·羅梅羅拍攝了影片《活死人之夜》（Night of the living dead），影片一經(jīng)上映便受到了廣大的好評。這部影片使得僵尸遠(yuǎn)離了巫毒教，進(jìn)而成為全新形象的怪物。而正是因為這部影片的出現(xiàn)，使得喪尸成為了代表近代恐怖電影的新寵兒。
此后，喬治·羅梅羅又于1979年推出了他的第二部喪尸電影《活死人黎明》（Dawn of the dead），頓時，世界各地猶如如雨后春筍一般的大量出現(xiàn)了類似的作品。喪尸電影開始風(fēng)靡全球。1985年，喬治·羅梅羅拍攝了他的第三部喪尸電影《喪尸出籠》（Day of the Dead），與前兩部影片共同構(gòu)成了喬治·羅梅羅的僵尸三部曲。
喬治·羅梅羅的喪尸三部曲不但成為了喪尸電影的一座里程碑，還為當(dāng)代喪尸電影中的僵尸下定了準(zhǔn)確的定義。就像香港影片中的僵尸永遠(yuǎn)都是穿著清朝官服，朝珠、補服、頂戴花翎俱全，留著長長的辮子一樣，喬治·羅梅羅的喪尸具有以下幾個特征：
⒈因為不明原因讓喪尸死而復(fù)生，而喪尸本身沒有任何的意識和思考能力，完全是靠本能在活動；
⒉喪尸喜歡吃人肉，為了找尋活生生的人肉而襲擊人類；
⒊喪尸會感染，被僵尸咬到的人死后也會變僵尸攻擊原本一起并肩作戰(zhàn)的伙伴；
⒋喪尸不會死亡，因為早已是死人了，所以不管如何去傷害他的肉體，僵尸還是會繼續(xù)活動下去；
⒌成群結(jié)隊緩慢前進(jìn)的喪尸集團(tuán)，然后追殺活人所產(chǎn)生的恐慌，造成觀眾的心理壓迫。
此后僵尸電影中的無不按此作為刻畫僵尸的準(zhǔn)則，就連游戲巨作《生化危機》系列中的所有游戲設(shè)定故事、場景發(fā)展都是依照喬治·羅梅羅《死亡三部曲》系列的喪尸模式策劃的。
人物去世
2017年7月17日早上，被譽為現(xiàn)代恐怖電影之父的美國導(dǎo)演喬治·A·羅梅羅因肺癌去世，享年77歲。
