丹尼斯在美國(guó)的北加州出生和長(zhǎng)大，高中畢業(yè)后他被提供以各種體育類(lèi)獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金，但他卻選擇了去American Academy of Dramatic Arts學(xué)習(xí)演戲。1979年，27歲的丹尼斯正式展開(kāi)表演生涯，首個(gè)角色是客串出演《The White S Dennis Haysbert
hadow》里面的一位籃球運(yùn)動(dòng)員，此后它又出現(xiàn)在了《Lou Grant》、《Laverne & Shirley》、《The A-Team》、《Magnum》、《P.I.》、《Buck Rogers》以及《Duckman》等劇集當(dāng)中，直到2001年成功扮演《24小時(shí)》中后來(lái)成為總統(tǒng)的黑人參議員一角，總共演出了3季。之后他又在CBS《The Unit》（秘密行動(dòng)組）當(dāng)中作為主角出現(xiàn)，依然是塑造充滿了個(gè)人英雄主義色彩的高大形象。
