丘成棟,男,原籍廣東省梅州市 蕉嶺縣,1952年生于香港,曾任美國 伊利諾伊大學(xué)芝加哥分校數(shù)學(xué)、統(tǒng)計和計算機科學(xué)系 特聘教授,該校信息控制實驗室主任,IEEE Fellow,國際頂尖數(shù)學(xué)專業(yè)雜志《Journal of Algebraic Geometry》創(chuàng)始人與主編、《Communications in Information and Systems》創(chuàng)始人與主編。

個人成就
2011年6月,著名數(shù)學(xué)家丘成棟(Stephen Yau)教授辭去美國伊利諾伊大學(xué) 芝加哥分校的永久職位,接受 清華大學(xué)邀請,全職到 清華大學(xué)數(shù)學(xué)科學(xué)系工作。他已來到清華大學(xué)并辦完入職手續(xù),成為了清華大學(xué)的一名正式教授。
此后,丘成棟教授將全身心地投入到清華大學(xué)數(shù)學(xué)學(xué)科的發(fā)展與建設(shè),為清華大學(xué)數(shù)學(xué)學(xué)科的教學(xué)科研、學(xué)科建設(shè)、人才隊伍建設(shè)和國際合作交流等作出貢獻。丘成棟教授1976年獲美國紐約州立大學(xué)石溪分校博士學(xué)位,歷任美國普林斯頓高等研究院成員(1976-77),哈佛大學(xué)Benjamin Pierce助理教授(1977-80),伊利諾伊大學(xué)芝加哥分校數(shù)學(xué)、統(tǒng)計和計算機科學(xué)系副教授(1980-84)、教授(1984-)、特聘教授(2005-)。
他開創(chuàng)了natural vector方法來表示基因組和蛋白質(zhì)。 如果兩個基因組或蛋白質(zhì)從生物意義上互相接近,那么它們的natural vector具有很近的距離。因此,natural vector方法不僅對基因組和蛋白質(zhì)提供了快速、唯一的表示,而且成為有力的聚類和預(yù)測工具;趎atural vector方法,丘教授計劃構(gòu)造一個 基因組數(shù)據(jù)庫和一個 蛋白質(zhì)數(shù)據(jù)庫。與當(dāng)前的基因組或蛋白質(zhì)數(shù)據(jù)庫不同,他構(gòu)造的新的數(shù)據(jù)庫將支持對所有已知的基因組和蛋白質(zhì)進行同時的比較研究。公共蛋白質(zhì)數(shù)據(jù)庫記錄了當(dāng)前有超過八百萬的蛋白質(zhì)存在。在如今的方法中,只有natural vector方法可以完成同時比較這個“不可能的任務(wù)”。丘教授計劃在清華大學(xué)組建一個團隊來開展這個科研項目。
