RalphVaughanWilliamsleftavariedoeuvrethatincludesorchestralworks,songs,operas,andvariouschoralcompositions.WhileprimarilydrawingontherichtraditionofEnglishfolksongandhymnody,VaughanWilliamsproducedwell-lovedworksthatfitintolargerEuropeantraditionsandgainedworldwidepopularity..
VaughanWilliams,wholosthisfatherearlyinlife,wascaredforbyhismother.Related,throughhismother,tobothCharlesDarwinandtheWedgwoodsofpotteryfame,hegrewupwithoutfinancialworries.HestudiedhistoryandmusicatTrinityCollege,Cambridge,andfinishedupattheRoyalCollegeofMusic,whereheworkedwithParry,Wood,andStanford.In1897,theyearhemarriedAdelineFisher,VaughanWilliamstraveledtoBerlintostudywithMaxBruch,alsoseekingMauriceRavelasateacherseveralyearslater,despitethefactthattheFrenchcomposerwasthreeyearshisjunior.In1903,hestartedcollectingEnglishfolksongs;certaincharacteristicsofEnglishfolkmusic,particularlyitsmodaltonalities,inmanywaysinformedhisapproachtocomposition.VaughanWilliamsfurtherdevelopedhisstylewhileworkingaseditoroftheEnglishHymnal,whichwascompletedin1906.HisworkontheEnglishHymnalwentbeyondediting,forhecontributedseveralnewhymntunes,mostnotablytheSinenomine,thetuneforthehymnForAlltheSaints.Thecomposer’sinterestinandknowledgeoftraditionalEnglishmusicisreflectedinhissongcycleOnWenlockEdge(1909),basedonselectionsfromA.E.Housman’simmenselypopularvolumeofpoetryAShropshireLad.InhisFantasiaonaThemeofThomasTallis,composedin1910,VaughanWilliamsintroducedantiphonaleffectswithinthecontextofmodaltonality,juxtaposingconsonant,butunrelated,triads.Composedin1914,hisSymphonyNo.2,"ALondonSymphony"bringstolife,withgreatcharm,thesoundsofLondonfromdawntodusk.Thatyear,VaughanWilliamsalsowrotehispastoralTheLarkAscending,forviolinandorchestra.WhenWorldWarIbrokeout,the41-year-oldcomposerenlistedasanorderlyinthemedicalcorps,becomingfamousfororganizingchoralsingingandotherentertainmentinthetrenches.Hewascommissionedfromtheranks,endinghiswarserviceasanartilleryofficer.Thewarinterruptedthecomposer’sworkbutdidnot,itseems,disrupttheinnercontinuityofhiscreativedevelopment.TheSymphonyNo.3("Pastoral"),composedin1922,conjuresupafamiliarworld,effectivelyincorporatingfolksongmotivesintosonoritiescreatedbysequentialchords.Whilecriticsdetectedpessimisticmoodsandthemesinthelatersymphonies,ascribingashifttoadarkervisiontothecomposer’sallegedgeneralpessimismabouttheworld,VaughanWilliamsrefusedtoattachanyprogrammaticcontenttotheseworks.However,thecomposercreatedaconvincingmusicaldescriptionofadesolateworldinhisSymphonyNo.7"SinfoniaAntarctica"(1952),whichwasinspiredbytherequesttowritethemusicforthefilmScottoftheAntarctic.Inadditiontohissymphonies,VaughanWilliamscomposedhighlyacclaimedreligiousmusic,aswellasworksinspiredbyEnglishspiritualliterature,culminatinginhis1951operaThePilgrim’sProgress,basedonthespiritualclassicbyJohnBunyan.Anartistofextraordinarycreativeenergy,VaughanWilliamscontinuedcomposingwithundiminishedpowersuntilhisdeathat87.~AMG,AllMusicGuide
