1981年清華大學(xué)數(shù)學(xué)專業(yè)本科（提前）畢業(yè)。畢業(yè)后留學(xué)美國(guó)，先后獲哥倫比亞大學(xué)統(tǒng)計(jì)學(xué)碩士學(xué)位、耶魯大學(xué)運(yùn)籌學(xué)/管理科學(xué)碩士學(xué)位、哈佛大學(xué)經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)博士學(xué)位。之后任教于斯坦福大學(xué)、馬里蘭大學(xué)、加州大學(xué)伯克利分校。

2006年10月起任清華大學(xué)經(jīng)濟(jì)管理學(xué)院院長(zhǎng)。

2018年1月，入選清華大學(xué)首批文科資深教授。

2018年4月起任西湖大學(xué)校董會(huì)主席。

多年來(lái)，教育問(wèn)題一直是中國(guó)社會(huì)的焦點(diǎn)問(wèn)題，很早就引起了錢(qián)穎一的關(guān)注和思考。豐富的求學(xué)經(jīng)歷（清華大學(xué)、哥倫比亞大學(xué)、耶魯大學(xué)、哈佛大學(xué)）和執(zhí)教經(jīng)驗(yàn)（斯坦福大學(xué)、馬里蘭大學(xué)、伯克利加州大學(xué)、清華大學(xué)），讓這位經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)家深入了解國(guó)內(nèi)外教育的實(shí)際情況，中國(guó)教育的問(wèn)題所在，并積極在一所學(xué)院探索教育改革的實(shí)踐。擔(dān)任院長(zhǎng)8年多來(lái)，錢(qián)穎一沒(méi)有再帶過(guò)一個(gè)研究生和博士生，也沒(méi)有申請(qǐng)過(guò)一個(gè)研究課題，而是集中精力，在清華大學(xué)經(jīng)濟(jì)管理學(xué)院推進(jìn)教育改革，履行一個(gè)院長(zhǎng)的職責(zé)。（中華工商時(shí)報(bào)評(píng)）

錢(qián)穎一是經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)家，但在他的筆下和演講中，卻常常高頻次地出現(xiàn)“法治”一詞。十多年來(lái)，每當(dāng)論及經(jīng)濟(jì)“轉(zhuǎn)軌”和市場(chǎng)經(jīng)濟(jì)，他往往要強(qiáng)調(diào)“法治”的不可或缺作用。（新民晚報(bào)評(píng)）

2017年12月21日，錢(qián)穎一入選“2017年度中國(guó)留學(xué)人員50人榜單”。

2018年1月，入選清華大學(xué)首批文科資深教授。

雖然中國(guó)的改革和轉(zhuǎn)軌受到了一些關(guān)注，但對(duì)于許多經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)家來(lái)說(shuō)，他們對(duì)中國(guó)的改革成功不能理解。拋開(kāi)意識(shí)形態(tài)不論，中國(guó)的成功與已有理論的許多方面相違背。

結(jié)構(gòu)的調(diào)整不僅是三方面比例的調(diào)整，背后一定有深層次的原因，需要深層次的改革，那就是要調(diào)整政府與居民，與企業(yè)，與市場(chǎng)的關(guān)系。這個(gè)任務(wù)不完成的話，結(jié)構(gòu)調(diào)整是非常困難的。（證券時(shí)報(bào)網(wǎng)快訊中心）

2012年，錢(qián)穎一在中國(guó)發(fā)展高層論壇上發(fā)言認(rèn)為，中國(guó)加快經(jīng)濟(jì)結(jié)構(gòu)調(diào)整，不僅表現(xiàn)在要解決投資過(guò)高、消費(fèi)過(guò)低和經(jīng)濟(jì)增長(zhǎng)過(guò)度依賴出口三方面的比例失衡問(wèn)題，還需要推進(jìn)深層次的改革。（新華網(wǎng)）
