約翰·休斯頓是一位以反叛和古怪著稱的偉大導(dǎo)演，9次被奧斯卡提名，曾摘得奧斯卡 最佳導(dǎo)演和最佳劇本獎(jiǎng)，其他獎(jiǎng)項(xiàng)更是難窮其盡。
1906年8月5日，具有蘇格蘭和愛爾蘭 血統(tǒng)的約翰·休斯頓出生在 內(nèi)華達(dá)的一個(gè) 小鎮(zhèn)，據(jù)說這個(gè)小鎮(zhèn)是約翰的祖父在一次牌局中贏來(lái)的。他的父親就是日后成名的演員 沃爾特·休斯頓，母親是報(bào)社記者，經(jīng)常周游各地尋找素材。約翰是家里的獨(dú)生子，3歲時(shí)就開始和表演雜耍的父親登臺(tái)獻(xiàn)藝。約翰7歲時(shí)，父母離婚了，他不得不輪流跟隨著父母。童年時(shí)的約翰體弱多病，曾因 心臟病和腎病住進(jìn) 療養(yǎng)院。不過后來(lái)，不可思議的奇跡發(fā)生了，14歲的約翰中途輟學(xué)，成長(zhǎng)為一名 天賦異稟的 拳擊手，拿到 加州業(yè)余拳擊錦標(biāo)賽 輕量級(jí)冠軍，在25場(chǎng)比賽中贏得22場(chǎng)。
18歲時(shí)，約翰同中學(xué)時(shí)的戀人結(jié)婚，并開始登上百老匯舞臺(tái)。可是天生野性十足的他很快放棄了婚姻和表演生活，去墨西哥另謀 出路。很快，約翰成為騎兵部隊(duì)中的官員和專業(yè)騎手，同時(shí)偷偷編寫劇本。為了控制自己的 流浪癖，約翰回到美國(guó)尋求報(bào)導(dǎo)工作，同時(shí)為很多報(bào)紙、雜志創(chuàng)作短篇小說。1932年，約翰那顆 不羈的心再次蠢蠢欲動(dòng)，他動(dòng)身前往倫敦和巴黎學(xué)習(xí)繪畫素描， 曾幾何時(shí)，窮困潦倒的他變成了 無(wú)家可歸的乞討者。
1933年，約翰再度回到美國(guó)，開始出演影片，并充分發(fā)揮了編劇才能，為華納兄弟公司創(chuàng)作了多個(gè)劇本。約翰的真正成功始于1941年的導(dǎo)演處女作《馬耳他之鷹》，該片不僅讓亨佛萊·鮑嘉成為了 超級(jí)巨星，還廣受影評(píng)人和觀眾的肯定，即使在65年后， 《馬耳他之鷹》仍不愧為最偉大的 偵探片。
二戰(zhàn)期間，約翰以通信兵中尉的身份為美國(guó)政府拍攝了多部紀(jì)錄片，同時(shí)他的第二次婚姻也走到終點(diǎn)。1946年，約翰與出演《 亂世佳人》的伊夫林·凱斯成婚，但兩人的家庭只維持了很短時(shí)間。同年，他將著名劇作家沙特的劇本《No Exit》搬上百老匯舞臺(tái)，雖然票房失敗，卻贏得了紐約戲劇評(píng)論獎(jiǎng)的最佳外語(yǔ)戲劇獎(jiǎng)。
1948年，好萊塢的殊榮再次垂青于約翰，《浴血金沙》讓他拿到了奧斯卡最佳導(dǎo)演和劇本獎(jiǎng)，參演本片的約翰的父親也拿到 奧斯卡最佳男配角獎(jiǎng)。約翰在片中扮演了一位游客，此后他暫停表演長(zhǎng)達(dá)10多年。
約翰迎來(lái)了全盛期，一批最優(yōu)秀的美國(guó)電影也由此而生。另外，作為人權(quán)運(yùn)動(dòng)的熱情擁護(hù)者，他和其他人一起于1947年成立了“ 第一修正案委員會(huì)”，以同“非美活動(dòng)調(diào)查委員會(huì)”進(jìn)行堅(jiān)決斗爭(zhēng)。由于失望于好萊塢的 黑名單扼殺了很多天才的藝術(shù)生涯，約翰同第四任妻子、芭蕾舞演員恩里卡一起移居愛爾蘭。1969年，恩里卡因車禍不幸喪生，約翰的第四次婚姻就此畫上句號(hào)。1972年，在墨西哥的約翰舉行了第五次婚禮，5年后，他的最后一次婚姻仍沒能擺脫破敗的宿命。
60年代，約翰重又回到臺(tái)前，開始出演了大量影片，其中57歲時(shí)出演的《紅衣主教》為他贏得奧斯卡最佳男配角提名。同時(shí)，他的女兒安吉利卡·休斯頓也開始在父親的幫助下在表演上取得長(zhǎng)足進(jìn)步，并且終于憑1985年約翰執(zhí)導(dǎo)的影片《 現(xiàn)代教父》奪得 奧斯卡最佳女配角獎(jiǎng)。
80年代中后期的約翰雖然仍然佳作不斷，但因患有肺氣腫而逐漸力不從心，可他依然不知疲倦，經(jīng)常一邊吸氧一邊工作。為了幫助兒子 丹尼·休斯頓邁好導(dǎo)演生涯的第一步，身體虛弱的約翰堅(jiān)持要為丹尼的《Mr.North》保駕護(hù)航，不料突發(fā)肺炎，在片場(chǎng)辭世，享年81歲。
