第一次世界大戰(zhàn)時(shí)期威廉?A?韋爾曼(William A. Wellman)（1896-1975）是空軍飛行員。戰(zhàn)后在波士頓從事羊毛事業(yè)。1919年到高爾溫片廠當(dāng)下級(jí)演員，后來(lái)升為副導(dǎo)演。他是一位屬于萬(wàn)能型的導(dǎo)演，任何型態(tài)的電影他都能拍，特別是拍他有經(jīng)驗(yàn)的航空片，更是拿手（第一屆奧斯卡最佳金像獎(jiǎng)就是他導(dǎo)演的《翼》），也能夠拍感人的文藝片，還能拍如《羅賓漢》這一類富有懸疑性的動(dòng)作片。他的最大功績(jī)就是三十年代導(dǎo)了引起全世界關(guān)民的黑社會(huì)影片，然后他又導(dǎo)演如《國(guó)民公敵》這類以社會(huì)問(wèn)題為主題的社會(huì)性作品，當(dāng)時(shí)他的聲望正如旭日中天。他的導(dǎo)演手法非常直截了當(dāng)，不玩弄技巧，一直線的沖入主題，1937年他導(dǎo)演《星海浮沉錄》，獲得奧斯卡影片金像獎(jiǎng)。
